West Orange HS football team hosts Essex Shootout, enjoys impressive showing
The West Orange High School football team had a good time during the Essex Shootout at WOHS on the 20th of July in the year 2013.
The Mountaineers took the second place in “A” division of the competition in 7-on-7 scheme.
In the pool play, they got out of it without dropping a single match; they won four matches. This placed them as the number three seed and they won that bracket, beating Somerville which was the number two seed.
The championship game was very interesting against Newark East Side; this team had eliminated Plainfield in the semis.
East Side started off swiftly scoring an interception for 3 points and a touchdown to give East Side a 9 – 0 lead. The West Orange responded on a TD and the subsequent foul line shot to make it 9-8 Montana.
East Side finally kicked a TD to take the score to 16-8 however, West Orange came back with a TD of their own. West Orange, out of time for a field goal attempt, scored on the subsequent two-point conversion as quarterback Charlie LaMorte threw a jump ball to 6-foot-5 wide receiver/ Syracuse University commit Terrell Wilfong in the back of the end zone.
How in overtime there is only one play for each team. The team that is awarded the most Yards needed to complete the play determines the winning team. East Side went for the 40 yard touchdown and throwing a pass miraculously they scored on the deep bomb. Fierce battles were expected in West Orange, but in the key match itself a deep bomb was denied, so East Side was clinching the title.
While, West Orange has previously welcome the Essex Shootout for the past several years during the month of July. The teams that played this year’s tournament included 25 teams found across the state. The event utilized three fields: There is Suriano Stadium field for the football and baseball section specifically for the freshmen teams, Lincoln Field usually utilized for soccer games.
The WOHS head coach Darnell Grant had a chance to win with his team in the championship game but unfortunately lost but still he was very much polite about it.
“It is always ideal to be on the winning side but as much as I enjoy watching my own players, it is exciting to see cheerful players from the other teams ESPECIALLY those who rarely get a shot at winning championships during the regular season It’s awesome The ambience is great This is why I wanted to bring my football prowess here in the town and to the county. ”
The Mountaineer Classic will mark the start of the regular season with West Orange as being the host for the said event Thursday to Saturday, August 29-31.
Jefferson is scheduled to play Verona on 29 th of August at 7 in the evening.
Snyder plays the Hillside team on Aug. 30 at the scheduled 3:00 PM and Orange will play West Orange at 7:30 PM On Aug. 31 Columbia plays Newark West side at 3:00 PM and in a repeat of the Essex Shootout semi-final match, Plainfield takes on Newark East Side.
