South Anchorage HS baseball looking to have another undefeated run
Last year, the South Anchorage High School baseball team did not lose any games. They are now trying to win state champions again this spring. Coach Taylor Nerland thinks many young players will have their turn to play well and show off with the Wolverines. The official season starts on March 2nd and will continue until mid-May when school ends. South is likely to have enough players joining in, creating one varsity team and two junior teams. The top spot to see which teams are playing is the Alaska Legion's website at www.AlaskaLegion.com.
Assistant Coach Matt Sugita points out that some of South's players have been playing together since they were nine years old (on Little League and traveling teams under Coach Len Story). So, they are close friends who had previous wins. He wishes them to do well again. Three of South's best pitchers, Seniors Curtis Hebert, Oliver Brown and Isaac Johnson will be returning. Recently, Hebert (who also plays catcher and field) was picked by MaxPreps as the best baseball player in Alaska for 2022. Hebert has promised to join the University of Portland's baseball team at a high level after he finishes school. Brown (player who handles the shortstop and pitches) has promised to play big-time baseball at Holy Cross. Johnson (pitcher) will join Concordia St. Paul in Minnesota for smaller Division II games.
Nerland says they're focusing on playing more games this baseball season. The most games they can play is 22. However, many teams usually only played 12 or 13 before starting state and regional events that last three days in a row. The weather can affect a lot how many more games can be played. Southern coaches think Southeast Alaska teams, Wasilla, Palmer and Colony will have good competition. Both Eagle River and Service teams last year were very young. They think that most players from those groups will return this year. The Wolverines always have a big competition with Dimond. This is likely to keep happening.
The South High School and Legion teams always need more coaches. If anyone wants to join in, they are asked nicely. They should contact us.
