Darius and Dante hosting inaugural Stills Brothers Big Man Camp July 13 in Bridgeport
Ex Fairmont Senior and WVU football stars, Darius & Dante Stills are planning the first annual “Stills Brothers Big Man Camp” at Wayne Jamison Field in Bridgeport Saturday July 13.
The camp is open for boys in the age range of 10-18 who play in the trenches, as an offence or defence lineman. Darius said he and Dante envision the need to have camps for all positions in the future but their immediate goal is to embrace just the lineman positions.
“It is just hope that local and anybody around the state or country who would wish to come can come and learn a little bit from two people that played NFL a little bit,” Darius added. “And also provides them with a good chance to learn and to improve themselves because I think that local kids don’t have the same chance to learn as some, you know? That’s why, considering what I did and what Dante is doing now it would be rather unfair to stay indifferent to the needs of our people. ”
From Darius’s narration, it is evident that the initial thought of coming up with a football camp was conceived when they were young though Dante mentioned it when they were at West Virginia University. For them and no matter whether they played football in the NFL or not – they view it as a way to help.
Regarding the planning of the Big Man Camp, Darius said that it began at the end of April and in the beginning of May. Darius who is from Fairmont has been the one who has calculated it most, while Dante has been walking around and coming up with suggestions occasionally mostly because he plays for Arizona Cardinals in Arizona.
“Darius is back home he can do even more things. ” NJ said word for word like the last words were etched in his memory. “I am giving suggestions, things that we should do like during certain drills, the layout, things we should bring to the camp and stuff like that. Until I come back [to Fairmont] in about a week, week and a half, Darius is taking the lead. ”
The Stills brothers have faced the reality of attempting to put on a camp within the matter of a few months. Since organizing this type of event fell under Darius’ jurisdiction, he did not know much about it and had to adapt quickly to the basic specifics of a gathering such as planning format and venue.
The format will include grouping, with the kids being taken through drills based on systems that expose them to basic and special skills in the offence and defense lines. Looking at the words of Darius, it can be stated that he underlined such a point that if a player wants to make it to college, he or she has to master both sides.
‘It is important for someone in growing stage; especially in high school to be able to hold multiple standings,’ Darius replied. “That gives you a better opportunity for a scholarship So the offensive lineman will learn defensive stuff, and defensive lineman will learn offensive stuff Every one is going to learn everything.
The other alteration that was made was the selection of the camp venue. Some issues arose and the plan was changed, the camp was initially set to be held at East-West Stadium in Fairmont but then moved to Wayne Jamison Field at Bridgeport High as pointed out by Dante.
It is believed that by now Darius and Dante must have secured about 100 kids interested in the camp. They are 120 and Dante reported that by June 25, only around 90 of them are occupied.
The number of kids has also prompted the camp to split into two age groups: 10-13 and 14-18 years of age. Darius said it is because the management wants the young players to have more active role and they do not want them to get distracted by enormous groups.
“We think it would be better if, especially the young ones, the 10 year old for instance, the ones who are supposed to learn, were more hands on,” Darius added. “If we had 80 people in one group the younger guys aren’t gonna be able to learn because they’re too busy distracted by everything else my goal is to be able to teach the kids and learn from them also And we don’t want to have too many people in one group because people learn different ways some may be hand’s on some may be seated some may like to work in groups so I want the group to be in the middle of
Since, there will be about 300 kids expected to be there Darius and Dante will be recruiting some other lineman that they know into joining them with helping run the camp. Dante said there will be approximately 10 other volunteers to assist in running the stations in the camp.
“Yeah I’m in the process of messaging a couple players at WVU to come down as well,” Dante said. I contacted Zach [Frazier], but at the moment Heaping was not available and therefore told Zach to call me. I have couple coaches that’ll help out You actually need couple coaches that will help out. I believe my dad will be coming in and assist with some drills as well or something to that effect.
“Every drill is going to be occupied,” I said to him, “Me and Darius will just have to go around station to station, give input advice kind of stuff like that. ”
Although cannot conduct camps with the eighth graders, the head coach of Fairmont Senior High School, Nick Bartic, who was a coach of the Stills brothers in high school, is happy to see his ex-students organizing camps for future football players in West Virginia.
“If you are able to have a cycle of guys becoming successful and then being able to come back and be productive members of the society, then you know you’re doing the right thing,” Bartic said. “When we have guys doing that, after they have gone on from the program, when they come back to help out the future of our community and kids in the area, that is our major goal,” he added, commending the efforts of his players who identify with their community showing enough care to help out thus being good role models.
Again, as of June 25, there is about 30 places open. Any parent wishing their child to join the camp, should contact the Camp Director, Darius Stills. He can be reached on through messenger through his Facebook account. To add on this there is a registration fee for players at $50 per player.
Thus, the Stills Brothers Big Man Camp will be starting from 12:00 p. m. on July 13. The children who are in the age bracket of 10-13 years are served from 12pm14. 0 pm while the teenagers of 14-18 years engage in their practice from 3. 0 pm to 5. 0 pm.
